The Australian government has announced that it will invest AUD 53 million through the Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) program to fund the establishment of the Critical Minerals and Critical Industries Cooperative Research Centre (CMCI CRC), aiming to enhance the country's critical mineral refining capacity and promote the development and commercialization of new processing technologies.
The centre will focus on critical minerals essential for the low-carbon economy, such as lithium, vanadium, and cobalt, helping Australia fully unlock the value of its mineral resources and increase the added value of its industrial chain. The project brings together 62 partners, including 43 Australian companies, 11 research institutions, and 4 leading industry organizations, forming a collaborative innovation system integrating industry, academia, and research.
It is reported that the total funding for the centre amounts to AUD 238 million. Research efforts will concentrate on high-value mineral development, breakthrough refining technologies, and sustainable processing solutions, with the goal of boosting Australia's domestic critical mineral processing capacity, driving employment and export growth, and strengthening the country's position in the global critical minerals supply chain.
